How to choose the right thickness for rendered wall insulation

How do you choose the right façade insulation thickness for a rendered renovation?

Renovating a façade with render does more than give your home a fresh, modern appearance. By insulating the façade at the same time, you can reduce heat loss, improve indoor comfort and protect the exterior walls against the weather for many years.

The thickness of the insulation is an important decision. Thicker insulation generally provides better thermal performance, but the ideal thickness differs from one property to another. The available space, insulation material, existing façade and your energy-efficiency goals all play a role.

At Faccader, we assess every façade individually. This allows us to recommend a technically feasible solution that suits your property, expectations and budget.

Why is façade insulation thickness important?

A considerable amount of heat can escape through inadequately insulated external walls. Your heating system must then work harder to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature.

Correctly installed façade insulation can help to:

  • Retain heat more effectively during winter.

  • Slow down indoor heat gain during warm periods.

  • Limit temperature fluctuations.

  • Reduce cold internal wall surfaces and draughts.

  • Lower energy consumption.

  • Improve overall indoor comfort.

  • Improve the property’s energy performance.

Thickness is not the only factor that determines insulation performance. The type of material, its thermal conductivity and the quality of installation are also important. A correctly installed system without gaps or thermal bridges will perform better than a thicker layer that has not been installed carefully.

Which insulation thickness should you choose?

There is no standard thickness that is ideal for every property. The dimensions below provide a general overview of the possibilities. The final choice should always be based on the technical condition of the façade and the complete insulation system.

8 to 10 centimetres

An insulation thickness of 8 to 10 centimetres may be used when the available space is limited or when certain construction details offer little room for adjustment.

This thickness already provides a noticeable improvement compared with an uninsulated façade. For renovation projects with higher energy ambitions, a thicker layer may be more suitable if the property and its connection details allow it.

12 centimetres

Approximately 12 centimetres of façade insulation offers a good balance between performance, available space and investment for many renovation projects.

It can significantly reduce heat loss and noticeably improve indoor comfort. It is therefore a popular solution for properties where sufficient space is available but a very thick façade build-up is undesirable or technically difficult.

14 centimetres

At Faccader, we recommend approximately 14 centimetres of façade insulation in many situations. This thickness generally provides strong thermal performance without making the façade build-up unnecessarily bulky.

Potential benefits include:

  • Reduced heat loss through external walls.

  • A more comfortable and stable indoor climate.

  • Lower energy consumption.

  • A durable base for the new façade finish.

  • A good balance between investment and performance.

Whether 14 centimetres is the best choice for your property depends on the insulation material, the existing wall structure and the connections around roof edges, window openings and window sills.

16 to 20 centimetres

Property owners aiming for very high energy performance may choose an insulation thickness of 16 to 20 centimetres.

A thicker layer can further reduce heat loss, but it requires more space and careful technical preparation. Roof edges, connections, drainage, openings and window sills may need to be adapted to achieve an attractive and watertight result.

The additional benefit of every extra centimetre also gradually decreases. It is therefore important to consider not simply the maximum thickness, but the best balance between performance, feasibility and budget.

Which factors determine the ideal thickness?

Before recommending a thickness, we assess the complete façade system. We consider factors such as:

  • The existing condition of the façade.

  • The type and construction of the external wall.

  • The selected insulation material and its performance.

  • The available space around roof edges and other connections.

  • Connections around openings and window sills.

  • The desired energy performance.

  • The available renovation budget.

  • The selected façade finish.

  • Possible future renovation plans.

By assessing these factors together, we avoid applying one standard solution to every property. You receive a proposal that suits your project from both a technical and aesthetic perspective.

Do not consider thickness alone

Two insulation boards with the same thickness can perform differently because not every material conducts heat in the same way.

Performance is expressed using values such as:

  • The lambda value of the insulation material.

  • The thermal resistance or R-value of the insulation layer.

  • The total U-value of the façade construction.

A lower lambda value means that the material conducts heat less easily. At the same thickness, a material with a better lambda value can therefore provide more effective insulation.

Do not base your decision solely on the number of centimetres. The complete system and the quality of installation determine the final performance.

Render and insulation form one complete system

Render is a popular finish for an insulated exterior façade. It gives the property a clean appearance and protects the underlying construction against the weather.

A complete system generally consists of:

  1. Insulation boards securely fixed to the external wall.

  2. A reinforced base coat containing fibreglass mesh.

  3. A suitable primer.

  4. A decorative and protective rendered finish.

  5. Correctly installed connections and profiles.

All components must be compatible to achieve a durable result. Connections around roof edges, corners, plinths, openings and window sills require particular attention. Professional installation helps prevent cracking, moisture problems and thermal bridges.

At Faccader, we work with high-quality systems and pay close attention to preparation, connection details and finishing.

The benefits of insulation with render

A façade renovation combining insulation and render offers several advantages:

  • Reduced heat loss through the façade.

  • A more comfortable indoor climate.

  • Lower energy consumption.

  • Better protection for the external walls.

  • A renewed appearance.

  • A wide choice of colours and textures.

  • A possible improvement in energy performance.

  • Increased property appeal and value.

  • Less maintenance for ageing external walls.

The exact savings and payback period differ for every property. They depend on the original façade, heating system, energy consumption and selected insulation system.

Which thickness is best for your property?

For many renovations, 12 to 14 centimetres of façade insulation offers an attractive combination of thermal performance and practical feasibility. This does not mean that this thickness is automatically ideal for every property.

Where space is limited, a thinner solution may be necessary. For higher energy-efficiency ambitions, a thicker layer may be more appropriate. The selected material also influences the thickness required to achieve the desired insulation value.

An inspection of the existing façade therefore remains essential.
