A roof renovation or repair is not something you plan overnight. Your roof continuously protects your property against rain, wind, snow and extreme temperatures. It is therefore important to choose not only the right materials and an experienced roofing contractor, but also the right time of year.
Many people believe that roofing work can only be carried out in summer. That is no longer the case. Thanks to modern techniques, high-quality materials and careful site planning, many types of roofing work can now be completed throughout the year. Each season does, however, have its own advantages and points to consider.
At Faccader, we support homeowners, businesses and property managers with roof renovations, repairs and insulation projects. Drawing on our practical experience, we explain when different types of roofing work are best carried out and how you can avoid unnecessary costs, delays and unexpected problems.
There is no single season that is automatically the best choice for every roofing project. The ideal period depends on factors such as:
the type of roof;
the scope of the work;
the materials being used;
the condition of the existing roof;
the weather conditions;
the roofing contractor’s availability;
the urgency of any damage.
Spring and early autumn generally offer the mildest weather conditions. Summer is attractive for major renovation projects, but it is often a very busy period. Many roofing jobs can also be carried out safely and professionally in winter, provided the weather conditions allow it.
A roof is constantly exposed to the elements. During renovation work, part of the roof structure may temporarily be left open. Careful preparation and precise planning are therefore essential.
The chosen period can affect:
how quickly the work can be completed;
the correct application of roofing materials;
safety on the site;
the availability of experienced roofing contractors;
the overall cost of the project;
coordination with other renovation work, such as façade work, new windows or solar panels.
By planning your roofing work well in advance, you can avoid lengthy waiting times. You will also have more time to compare quotations, choose suitable materials and coordinate the different phases of your renovation.
For many roofing experts, spring marks the ideal start of the renovation season. Any damage caused during winter often becomes more visible, while the weather is usually milder and more stable than during the coldest months.
Temperatures are generally pleasant, allowing insulation materials, roofing membranes, adhesives and sealing products to be applied under favourable conditions.
The days also become longer, which means larger projects can be scheduled and completed more efficiently.
Another advantage is that damage caused by frost, storms or prolonged rainfall can be addressed quickly. This helps prevent small defects from developing into more serious and expensive problems later in the year.
Because many property owners want to begin their renovation in spring, demand for experienced roofing contractors rises quickly. Those who wait until spring to request quotations may have to deal with longer waiting times.
Are you planning to renovate your roof in spring? It is advisable to arrange a roof inspection during winter. This gives you an early overview of your roof’s condition and allows the work to be scheduled well in advance.
Summer remains the most popular season for a complete roof renovation. This is understandable: the days are long and, during dry periods, the work can generally continue with fewer interruptions.
However, this does not mean that summer is automatically the best choice for every roofing project.
During dry periods, roof tiles can be installed efficiently, certain flat-roofing materials can be applied under favourable conditions and finishing work can be completed with fewer delays.
Summer can also offer logistical advantages when several renovation projects are being combined, such as:
façade renovation;
new windows;
roof insulation;
solar panel installation;
painting or plastering work.
Coordinating these activities carefully can reduce the total duration of the renovation and prevent different contractors from getting in each other’s way.
Because summer is such a popular period, many roofing contractors are fully booked months in advance. Someone who only starts looking for a contractor in June may not secure a place in the schedule until autumn.
Planning ahead can therefore make the difference between having the work completed at your preferred time and facing a lengthy delay. For a complete roof renovation, it is best to request quotations several months in advance.
Not necessarily.
During a heatwave, roof surfaces can become extremely hot. This makes the work more physically demanding and can affect the application of certain materials.
Professional roofing contractors take these circumstances into account. They may start earlier in the day, introduce additional safety measures and adjust the installation process according to the temperature and the manufacturer’s instructions.
A dry summer day can therefore be favourable, but extreme heat requires careful planning, just like heavy rain.
Autumn is often underestimated as a suitable period for roofing work. Nevertheless, more and more property owners deliberately choose these months, especially when they want to prepare their home or building for winter.
At the beginning of autumn, temperatures are generally still mild enough for many roofing activities. The busiest part of the summer season is often over as well, which may allow for greater flexibility in scheduling.
A roof that has been fully inspected, repaired or renovated before winter provides additional protection against:
storms and strong winds;
prolonged rainfall;
low temperatures;
frost;
water infiltration.
Autumn is therefore a suitable time to replace damaged tiles, inspect roof connections, repair leaks and check the rainwater drainage system.
During autumn, leaves, small branches and other debris can accumulate in gutters, downpipes and drainage outlets. This can restrict the flow of rainwater and cause blockages.
Standing or overflowing water may subsequently cause damp problems around the roof, façade or roof edge.
At Faccader, we therefore also inspect the complete drainage system during roofing work. Thoroughly checking the gutters, outlets and connections helps prevent future problems.
This is a persistent misconception.
In the past, many roofing projects were postponed until spring because certain materials were more difficult to apply at low temperatures. Today, modern roofing membranes, high-quality insulation products and adapted installation methods make it possible to carry out professional roofing work during winter as well.
The weather naturally remains an important factor. In the event of snow, ice, heavy rain or strong winds, safety must always come first. The surface must also be suitable and sufficiently dry for the materials being installed.
When conditions are safe and the material specifications are followed, various types of work can be completed in winter, including:
roof inspections;
minor roof repairs;
replacing damaged roof tiles;
certain insulation work;
preparatory work;
urgent leak repairs.
Postponing a roofing problem until spring is not always advisable. A small leak can quickly worsen during cold or wet months and cause additional damage to the insulation, ceilings or roof structure.
The best period depends on your specific roof and the nature of the work.
Spring, summer and early autumn are often attractive options for a major, planned roof renovation. For inspections, maintenance and urgent repairs, however, it is not always necessary to wait for better weather.
The most important advice is therefore to start planning early. Have your roof inspected in advance, request quotations well ahead of time and discuss with your roofing contractor which temperatures and weather conditions are required for the selected materials.
This helps prevent rushed work and allows your roof renovation to be completed under the best possible conditions.
Are you unsure about the condition of your roof, or would you like to know which period is best for your renovation? A professional roof inspection provides a clear overview of any damage, necessary repairs and possible improvements to the insulation and drainage system.
At Faccader, we examine not only the visible roof covering, but also the connections, roof edges, gutters, drainage outlets and other vulnerable components. Based on this assessment, we recommend a suitable approach and schedule.
